Jeremy Corbyn weaves his magic in the Outer Hebrides

- By TOM PETERKIN

Corbynmania – or at least a laid back Hebridean version of it – was in evidence in the Western Isles when the UK Labour leader touched down in Lewis yesterday.

Jeremy Corbyn was delayed at Stornoway Airport for 15 minutes while he posed for selfies. Then it was off to Harris Tweed Hebrides mill at Shawbost where he met the former Labour MP Brian Wilson, who is chairman of the company.

Also in attendance was the Stone Island designer Asim Khan, who professed to be a Corbynista as well as a fashionista. Mr Corbyn was so impressed by the famous cloth that he promised to wear a Harris Tweed jacket at Prime Minister’s Questions. Demand for tickets for his town hall rally were such that it was moved to the larger Stornoway sports centre.

Mr Corbyn’s visit to the SNP held seat was part of a tour of marginal Scottish seats, which Labour says are key to the party returning to power at Westminster.

The SNP has a majority of 1,003 votes over Labour in the Western Isles and it would take a swing of 3.4 per cent for the seat to change hands.

Mr Corbyn will be in Glasgow today, where he will issue a call to tackle poverty and inequality and outline plans to build more housing.
