Johnston double-handed in bid to ring up Lanark Silver Bell success

Mark Johnston is doublehand­ed as he bids to land tonight’s Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell at Hamilton Park for the sixth time.

The Kingsley House trainer saddles Sennockian Star and Pumblechoo­k,whoareamon­g the 11 runners lining up for the £26,000 handicap over 1m 4f.

Furtherest traveller in the race is Brimham Rocks, who is trained in Andover by Ralph Beckett.thehampshi­reraider won comfortabl­y over course and distance last month and is partnered by Ben Curtis.

John Quinn-trained Indy arrives on a hat-trick following recent wins on similar ground over this trip at Haydock and Ripon.

There are five Scottishtr­ained runners: Corton Lad and Kesington Star for Keith Dalgleish, Mike Smith’s Gworn, Iain Jardine-trained Sepal and Donnachies Girl, trained by Alistair Whillans.

Last night’s feature race, the £25,000 Sodexo Scottish Trophy, was landed by Whatstheme­ssage for Dalgleish’s Carluke stable.

Winning jockey Joe Fanning said: “I’d say that nine furlongs stretches her stamina but she very game and versatile. She’s had a very good season and it’s a nice prize to win.”

Manshood got up on the line to pip Distant Past by a nose in the betfreebet­s.co.uk William The Lion Handicap for Paul Mulrennan.

At York, Enable put herself firmly on course for the Prix de l’arc de Triomphe when she enhanced her credential­s as the best middle-distance horse in training with a decisive front-running success in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks.

The 1-4 favourite made it Group One win number four for the season in devastatin­g fashion.

Pressing on relentless­ly under Frankie Dettori, she crossed the line five lengths clear of stablemate Coronet, to add to her wins in the English and Irish Oaks and last time out in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Enable was immediatel­y cut to even money by Paddy Power for the Arc at Chantilly on 1 October. Trainer John Gosden said: “She’s somewhat special. I think at a mile and a half she is the best filly I’ve ever trained, she’s exceptiona­l and able to do it both ways, from the front and off the pace.”
