Shakib excels with bat and ball to put Bangladesh in first Test driving seat against Australia

Shakib Al Hasan took five wickets as Bangladesh claimed the upper hand against Australia on the second day of the first Test in Dhaka.

Shakib, playing his 50th Test, followed up his 84 on day one by claiming five for 68 to help bowl the tourists out for 217 and hand Bangladesh a firstinnin­gs lead of 43.

The hosts increased that advantage to 88 as they closed on 45 for one with Tamim Iqbal, who also hit a halfcentur­yin the first innings, unbeaten on 30.

Australia, having resumed on 18 for three in reply to Bangladesh’s 260, found the going tough. Opener Matt Renshaw hit 45, but it required some strong lower- order resistance to prevent Bangladesh claiming an even greater advantage.

Ashton Agar held firm with an unbeaten 41 while Peter Hands combs truck 33 and number 10 Pat Cummins occupied90 balls for a stoic 25. Mehidy Hasan finished with three for 62.

Elsewhere, Rohit Sharma’s brilliant century guided India to a one-day internatio­nal series victor y in Sri Lanka as they coasted to a six-wicket win in K andy in a game marred by crowd trouble.

As the tourists closed in on their modest target of 218, fans threw bottles onto the pitch and the match was delayed for around 35 minutes before spectators were cleared from the ground and India completed victor y to go 3- 0 up in the five- match series.

Jasprit Bumrah’s five for 27 hadrestric­ted Sri Lanka to 217 for nine, with Lahiru Thirimanne’s 80 the only contributi­on of note from the hosts.

Akil aD an an jay as truck in his first and second overs to reduce India to 61 for four in reply. But Sharma responded with an unbeaten 124, from 145 balls, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni finished on 67 not out as the fifth- wicket pair put on a match- winning stand of 157.

Meanwhile, all-rounders Brett D’ olive ira and Ed Barnard have committed their futures to Worcesters­hire.

D’oliveira, 25, has scored two County Championsh­ip centuries this season, while 21- yearold Barnard averages 31 with the bat and has taken 28 wickets in Division Two.
