Events this month at the Scottish Poetry Library
The Last Burrah Sahibs, with Max Scratchmann
Scottish Poetry Library, 14 September, 7pm, £5 (£4)
The Last Burrah Sahibs is a one-man show about the old Scottish jute colonies along the Hooghly river in Bengal during the 1960s, when it was still possible to walk down Calcutta streets on a Saturday and only hear Scottish accents. Max Scratchmann was born into this old-style colonial life of luxury in the 1950s, long after it was supposed to have ended. Warm and funny, this show is a must for anyone interested in the history of Scotland’s children of empire.
Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back launch
Scottish Poetry Library, 27 September, 6:30pm, £4 (£3) The UK’S first major anthology of D/ deaf and disabled poets, Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets
Write Back is launched in Edinburgh, not least because over a fifth of the poets featured are based in Scotland. In addition to performances by many of the anthology’s contributors, the Scottish launch will include film and discussion around disabled and D/ deaf poetics, BSL interpreting and content, step-free access via lifts, gender-neutral and accessible toilets, and a degree of audio description.
National Poetry Day with Don Paterson
Jupiter Artland, Edinburgh, 28 September, 7pm, £12 What better – and more intriguing – way to celebrate National Poetry Day than to make your way to Jupiter Artland to see Don Paterson read al fresco amongst the sculpture park’s exhibits? Paterson is one of Scotland’s greatest living poets, and will be reading poems from throughout his career as he chooses a set that responds to the setting. Literary events are often described as unforgettable; this Jupiter Artland reading truly will be. ■
