Drivers could recharge electric cars by plugging them in to streetlights
Drivers of electric cars could soon be able to recharge their vehicles by plugging them in to lampposts across Scotland.
The plan comes as part of a move towards green motoring that will see a ban on new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2032 in Scotland and 2040 in the UK.
The proposal is one of a range of ideas aimed at encouraging a switch away from climatedamaging fossil fuels that is being considered by Scottish ministers. Another is requiring new car parks to provide charging points in every space.
Environmental campaign groups have welcomed the plan.
Dr Richard Dixon, director of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said:“the expansion of electric vehicles will undoubtedly create opportunities for innovative solutions and space for much-needed new thinking in transport.
“As Scotland begins to roll out low emissions zones over the next few years, electric vehicles will become much more popular. This means the charging infrastructure must be put in place to ensure this transition works.”
