The new leader of rightwing Eurosceptic party UKIP was announced today as relatively unknown Henry Bolton, who shocked pundits by beating favourite Anne Marie Waters..
@Youngvulgarian wrote: “Henry Bolton, the new UKIP leader, stood as a Lib Dem candidate in 2005. That’s an...i nteresting political career.”
@Tim_stanley commented: “Henry Bolton wins UKIP contest. Such a relief. A case of better the devil I’ve never heard of.”
@Chrisdeerin joked: “Has Henry Bolton resigned yet?”
@Sarahnobleld noted: “More people voted for the Monster Raving Loonies in the general election (3,890) than voted for Henry Bolton to be UKIP leader (3,874).”
#WORLDHEARTDAY Charities and politicians were among those getting involved in World Heart Day, which aims to increase awareness and funding to fight cardiovascular disease.
@Exerciseworks advised: “#Worldheartday September 29th Make it count for heart health: get active, be strong, and practice balance!” @Drtedros added: “Today is #Worldheartday. Cardiovascular diseases are still the world’s largest killer. We need more action, at all levels!”
@Gmkwito posted: “On #Worldheartday inspire people around you to be heart healthy. Spread awareness to cut down the risk of cardiovascular diseases.”
#BIGBEN The cost of repairing the Elizabeth Tower, which contains the giant Big Ben Bell, has more than doubled to £61 million from the £29m initial estimate. MPS were ridiculed for trying to ensure the bell could still be heard during the renovation.
@Muqadaam tweeted: “I seriously do not want to pay £61m for a clock. Especially when our sick/disabled & homeless are suffering .”
@Joanna_bish added: “£61million to restore Big Ben, love our iconic buildings but really ???? It could also pay 300+ nurses for 10 years. Nonsense UK decisions.”
@Samhun3 commented: “So that is 369m for Buckingham Palace & 61m for Big Ben. Yet some working have to use food banks. This country has its priorities very wrong.”
