#CATALONIA

A huge demonstration backing Spanish unity was held in Barcelona yesterday following a vote on independence for Catalonia which the Spanish government declared illegal. @broderick said: ‘Should be noted that many of the unionists protesting in Barcelona today came from outside Catalonia to march.’ @Gavinleebbc said: ‘Organisers of Spanish pro unity rally claim 950,000 people have taken to the streets of #Barcelona. Spanish transport police say 350,000.’ @Andymitten commented: ‘Huge pro-spain, antiindependence, march in Barcelona now. People shouting love for Spain AND Catalonia. Lots of Spanish, European and Catalan flags.’ @Karnamikko offered: ‘Highly Respected Mr. @Kofiannan: “Crisis in #Catalonia calls for consultation, not confrontation.” Will @ marianorajoy listen? Catalans do.’

#DUBAI

A Scot is facing a three-year jail term in Dubai for putting his hand on a man in a bar. Jamie Harron says he was trying to avoid spilling his drink and was holding his hand out when he “touched a man on his hip to avoid impact”. @shukuratalawal1 observed: ‘This just insane, it’s 2017 guys. So they would’ve preferred him to spill the drink?’ @Jhancoc64792904 commented: ‘Visit at your own risk. Scotland is beautiful. Why would you even leave?’ @Eeo_ofpoloinc offered: ‘Dubai is a beautiful place! They have strict rules! If you dont like em, dont go! Simple.’ @ilmbftf said: ‘Their Western designed skyscrapers belie their dark age mentality.’

#THERESAMAY

Theresa May has said she is “pretty resilient” and it is not her style to “hide from a challenge” despite a mishapstrewn party conference speech. @Jamieross commented: ‘Ruth Davidson probably meant this on Theresa May, to sound more supportive than it did: “She’s the best prime minister that we’ve got”.’ @Jamescleverly offered: ‘Just seen a story about me plotting against Theresa May. It’s complete & utter rubbish, TM has my unwavering support.’
