A mechanical and electrical engineering business has doubled its presence in Dundee after taking on some of the workers made redundant by the collapse of Scottish Electric Group.

Richard Irvin Energy Solutions (RIES), which also specialises in technical facilities management, opened an office in the city in 2014. It has now hired 12 members of staff to take its total headcount in Dundee to 24.

The business is said to be “very active” in Dundee, Fife and Tayside, providing support to a range of organisations, including Dundee City Council, Ninewells Hospital, the University of Dundee and the University of St Andrews.

Its current projects include the refurbishment of Perth crematorium with Morrison Construction, which is expected to complete in December.

Kevin Shinnie, head of RIES’S mechanical and electrical division, said: “This is not only a boost for our company but also for the wider business community in Dundee.

“We were disappointed to hear that Scottish Electric Group had fallen into liquidation and so we are delighted that we can help many of those workers affected by the collapse of their former employer.”

RIES employs some 450 staff across its network of bases in Dundee, Edinburgh, Elgin, Glasgow, Inverness and its head office in Aberdeen.

The group turns over £45 million a year, with 35 per cent of its business now coming from outside its North-east heartland. Its installation customers include Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall and Kier.
