#BUTEHOUSE

The official residence of the First Minister in Edinburgh has temporarily closed after a routine inspection of the A-listed Bute House discovered cracks in the ceilings. Cabinet meetings will be held at St Andrew’s House until the New Year. @davieclegg said: “The roof is literally coming in on the FM. She’s been decanted from Bute House for urgent ceiling repairs over winter months. No cost yet.” @Philipsim offered: “Nicola Sturgeon’s official residence, Bute House, shut for ‘urgent ceiling repairs’; Cabinet meetings & FM will go elsewhere until next year.” @Dennynews commented: “Fans of political metaphors rejoice: cracks have been found in Bute House.” @Erh72doninexile joked: “Cue an avalanche of ‘roof falls in on the SNP’ tweets as unimaginative as this one.”

#PAYINTERNS

A social media campaign has been launched with the aim of ensuring all internships are paid, following concerns that some people were being priced out of entering certain professions where work placements are common. Three out of four people support a change in the law, polling suggests. @Houseofbargain_ said: “Fully support #payinterns. I interned for almost a year in London, 4 years ago (in various national magazines) and wasn’t paid a penny.” @Lilybaileyuk commented: “Yes pay interns! All the ‘exposure’ in the world doesn’t buy food and housing.” @Gundyoxford added: “Things that count as payment: Being paid actual money. Things that don’t count: ‘Experience’ ‘opportunities’ ‘exposure’.” @sallyevanz1 observed: “If they are arrogant enough to expect you to work for nothing, what does that tell you about the firm? Walk away!”

#GREGHANDS

Twitters users were quick to mock the UK’S minister for trade, Greg Hands, after he tweeted a picture of a kebab shop and asked “How long before we have German fish and chips?” @mrdavidwhitley commented: “The Doner Kebab was invented in Berlin, Greg” @iaink85 replied: “Mate, foreign food is incredible (cf. chinese, tandoori, tonkatsu ramen, etc). International versions of fish and chips are very welcome.” @icklenellierose joked: “What’s next? German schnitzel?!”
