The Scotsman: continuing to invest in quality journalism
Readers will have noticed that the cover price of today’s Saturday Scotsman has gone up by 5p to £2. These things are never welcome – to readers or to journalists. None of us wants to pay more for anything. Economic circumstances have left us with little choice, unfortunately, and it is a measure we take with the greatest reluctance.
However, this is the first price rise for the Saturday Scotsman for more than a year, and the Monday to Friday price of £1.60 will remain unchanged. Substantial reductions are available via subscription. The challenging nature of the news industry will not have escaped you. One added complication has been an increase in the price of newsprint, up by 6 per cent.
Meanwhile, paid-for journalism in this country faces an unprecedented challenge from the avalanche of free, and often not very good, articles online. We try to make every edition of this newspaper an insight into Scotland. Thought-provoking coverage and comment, without a political axe to grind. Fewer of the unpleasant additives found in other products. A paper with heart, clear values and a thriving dialogue with its readers. These remain integral to who we are.
We are grateful to our readers, established and new, for your support so far – every day investing in quality journalism.
