England boss sends warning to Wilshere and Smalling

- By TOM ALLNUTT

Gareth Southgate has warned Jack Wilshere he will not pick him for England until he plays regularly for Arsenal.

Southgate named his latest 25- man England squad yes - terday and was equally bullish about his decision to drop Chris Smalling, insisting he only wants defenders who can play out from the back.

Wilshere and Smalling were both left out ahead of this month’ s friend lies against Germany and Brazil, with Daniel St ur ridge and Alex Ox lade-Chamberlain also among those overlooked.

Tammy Abraham, Rub en Loftus- Cheek and Joe Gomez received first senior call- ups, while Danny Rose and Jamie Vardy returned after injuries. Ashley Young, who last played for England in September 2013, was also recalled.

Wil she re has only played 13 minutes in the Premier League this season, but his club boss Arsene Wenger said the 25- year- old was ready for a call- up. Southgate disagrees.

“I don’t know how you can get in an England squad without getting in an Arsenal team,” Southgate said. “There is no question in our mind about Jack Wilshere’s ability and football brain and personality, we just need to see him playing regular league football before we think it is right to put him back in.”

If Wilshere can prove his fitness his international prospects look healthy, but Smalling might feel less optimistic after Southgate appeared to question his distribution.

“I have huge respect for Chris. He is a player playing at a big club,” Southgate said.

“We want to play in a certain way and the players I have brought in I want to see using the ball from the back and building it up in a certain way.

“There area few young defenders that haven’t got as many games under their belt and I think it is a great chance to see what they can do and see if they can play at this level.”

England play Germany next Friday and welcome Brazil the following Tuesday.
