Cadet’s name to be added to war memorial

- By SHÂN ROSS

A First World War Scottish RAF cadet is to have his name added to the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle after a retired police officer uncovered details of his death in a 1918 edition of The Scotsman.

Norman Ainslie Brown, who was born in Edinburgh in 1892 and died in October 1918, was already listed on the roll of honour at Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh.

Cadet Brown, who was the son of a solicitor, went to work as bank clerk in Toronto.

He died there while training as an RAF pilot.

Patrick Anderson, a former police sergeant, from Letham, Angus, realised Cadet Brown’s name was missing from the Edinburgh Castle memorial and researched historical records to submit an application.
