Cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy has hinted that he could soon be heading back home to Scotland.

Scotland’s most successful Olympian has lived in Manchester for the last 20 years.

But speaking ahead of his bike ride to the South Pole next year, he says he is sure one day soon he will return to his roots.

The 41-year-old, who grew up in Edinburgh, said: “We’re back up a fair bit as our families are still there and it’s always nice coming home.

“When you come past the Pentlands and drive over the brow of the hill and see 0 Sir Chris is planning a bike ride to the South Pole Edinburgh in the distance, it’s always good. I’m sure one day, hopefully not too far away, we’ll come back home.”

Sir Chris will be setting off from Antarctica’s Amundsen coast in November next year for his 400-mile bid to reach the Pole in record time.

He will be aiming to break both the cycling world record and the faster human-powered record, completed on skis in just over eight days.

It will take the six-time Olympic gold medal winner away from wife Sarra and their two young children for an adventure, he admits, will be “treacherous and dangerous”.

However, the cycling legend believes it is a challenge he simply could not turn down.

Sir Chris said: “Life passes by very quickly and when you have opportunities to do exciting things, you should grab them.”
