GRIDIRON

The Cincinnati Bengals raced to a 17-0 lead but were defeated 23-20 by a lastsecond field goal as the Pittsburgh Steelers won their seventh straight game. Andy Dalton - who threw 21 of 36 for 234 yards - twice connected with AJ Green in the first half to give the Bengals the advantage, with the Steelers’ only firsthalf score coming via the boot of Chris Boswell. But Ben Roethlisberger - who posted stats of 24 of 40 for 290 yards threw a 35-yard pass to Le’veon Bell early in the third quarter and levelled things at 20-20 with 3:51 remaining with a six-yard pass to Antonio Brown. Boswell – who had already scored two field goals – split the uprights from 38 yards to secure the win. Pittsburgh rookie wide receiver Juju Smith-schuster and Cincinnati cornerback George Iloka were later suspended for one game each by the NFL for violating league safety rules. Smith-schuster was flagged for unnecessary roughness and taunting after a blindside hit on Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict in the fourth quarter. Iloka was penalised for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Cincinnati Bengals 20 Pittsburgh Steelers 23

ICE HOCKEY

Alex Ovechkin has continued to move up the table for most NHL goals after helping the Washington Capitals to a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Two nights ago, Ovechkin matched Mark Recchi on 577 goals, putting him at joint-20th in the list, but a second-period strike on Monday night put him ahead of the former Pittsburgh Penguins player. The 32-year-old, now with 578 goals, assisted Brett Connolly’s power-play goal, and Devante Smith-pelly and Jakub Vrana also found the net for the Capitals. The Philadelphia Flyers put an end to their 10-game losing streak, with Scott Laughton scoring twice in the 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. Troy Brouwer scored his first goal of the season for the Flames, but it was not enough to dent Brian Elliott’s 43 saves. The Nashville Predators triumphed 5-3 against the Boston Bruins, with Pekka Rinne making 36 saves, and Mathew Barzal’s shoot-out goal claimed victory the New York Islanders over the Florida Panthers. Anders Lee was also celebrating his 100th career goal in the 5-4 victory.
