Wright urges Saints to replicate their training-ground form on match days

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright is looking for his side to take their training-ground form into match days.

The 2-1 home defeat by Kilmarnock last weekend meant Saints have won only two of their last 12 games and sit in seventh place in the Premiership table.

Ahead of the trip to Hamilton on Saturday, the Northern Irish manager revealed that too often performances have not been reflective of the good work shown by his squad during the week.

“Training is good, the players are working hard, there is a good spirit still but ultimately when it comes to a Saturday we have let ourselves down and we have not done well enough,” said Wright.

“Maybe sometimes I wish training was poor and the performances were better.

“The performances haven’t been dreadful, as some people want to make out. They just haven’t been to the level I would expect from the players and the level of consistency I would expect.

“We haven’t shown enough quality in the final third when we have been doing well in games and the Rangers game is a perfect example. We got 16 corners in that game and if you had said to me before the game you would get 16 corners I would expect us to at least come away with a couple of goals. But that didn’t happen.

“So there are still areas we can’t be happy with this season in terms of levels of consistency. And consistency is what we have been able to achieve over the last four seasons, in particular.”

Wright revealed that 20-yearold defender Aaron Comrie, expected to be out until January with a hamstring and tendon injury, is set to return sooner. He said: “Aaron could be back before the break. That is good news. We thought he would be back during the winter break, into January.

“At the minute it is going well, he has made a remarkable recovery. We need to make sure we don’t push him too hard that he breaks down, but he is making good progress and if that continue he will be back earlier than we thought.”
