The central belt was hit particularly hard by the country’s latest ‘named’ storm as Dylan disrupted travel plans on one of the busiest days of the year. Edinburgh’s New Year’s Eve celebrations were temporarily curtailed during the day as high winds closed Princes Street. @Greyseals joked: “If the current storm is called Dylan, surely the answer really is blowing in the wind?” @Vezzer83 predicted: “Fireworks in Princes Street Gardens will be fun tonight in this storm!” @Elvishcostello wrote: “On the third floor of a rickety seafrontflat- #Stormdylan is a bit of a monster - my mulled wine game is strong though - battening down for the duration.” @Sandraada26 added: “The Storm Dylan rain has stopped, it’s now a good drying day for the washing!”
#HOGMANAY
No-one celebrates the New Year quite like Scotland, and the country geared up yesterday to ring in 2018. Edinburgh was once again the vocal point of the nation’s celebrations, but house parties and first footing traditions were also in full swing. @Detrucci tweeted: “Happy Hogmanay to all my fellow Scots out there, and Happy New Year to everyone else too! Make it your best year yet!” @Soates95 warned: “Happy happy Hogmanay. It’s also definitely Hogmanay and not New Years Eve. Never call it New Year’s Eve.” @Glasgowmal advised: “Happy Hogmanay! Why not break all your resolutions early and enjoy the rest of the year.”

The traditional New Year derby took place on Saturday, and fans were still digesting the game yesterday. Rangers were the happier of the two teams as they came away from Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw. @Thepilgrim1912 wrote: “Candieas is tailor made for old firm games. A little workhorse with the heart of a lion. Wasn’t surprised he done well yesterday to be honest.” @Eringraham67 lamented: “Who’s idea was it to put an old firm the day before New Year’s Eve because now I’m 100% certain I’m going into 2018 in my bed sleeping.” @Wills1872 joked: “Anyone know what the 90 minute silence was for in the Celtic end?”
