Sugar tax explained

-

The so-called “sugar tax”, which will see a levy put on high sugar drinks, is due to come into force in April.

The move, announced by Chancellor Phillip Hammond in his November Budget, will typically see an 8p increase on a can of Coke in its current form, although many soft drinks makers, like Irn-bru, are looking to alter their recipe before the charge is introduced.

The sugar tax will apply to drinks with more than five grams of sugar per 100ml, which will be hit with a tax of 18p per litre. Those with eight grams or more of sugar per 100ml will have an extra tax of 24p per litre.
