Thieves steal Georgian coin from collector

-

Thieves have stolen a rare gold George III “spade” guinea from a collector in St Andrews.

The coin, which could be worth hundreds of pounds, was among 15 taken in a “distraction” crime involving two men who called at the collector’s home to view coins he had for sale. Once the men had left, the owner noticed a number of coins missing.

The gold guinea was, for almost 150 years, the standard gold coin of British currency.

The theft took place around 3pm on 22 December in the Churchill Crescent area of St Andrews.
