- By KATIE GRANT

0 Butcher Chris Mccabe with the Royal Deeside black pudding he says ‘saved his life’ after he used it to break out of a freezer A butcher trapped in a walk-in freezer bludgeoned his way to safety by using a frozen black pudding from Ballater as a battering ram.

Chris Mccabe became stuck inside the freezer at his shop in Totnes, Devon, when the door blew shut behind him.

The room was -20C when Mr Mccabe, 70, attempting to escape by pressing the door-release button, discovered the switch was “frozen solid”.

Searching for a tool with which to batter the button, the butcher found inspiration in the form of a frozen black pudding. “No-one could hear me banging. Black pudding saved my life,” Mr Mccabe said.

The 1.5kg sausage was produced by the Queen’s butcher, HM Sheridan of Ballater, Aberdeenshire, who has supplied Mr Mccabe with pudding for more than 20 years.
