Rusedski believes injuries have ruined Murray’s chance of winning another grand slam event

By Former British No 1 Greg Rusedski doesn’t think Andy Murray will win another grand slam title in his career.

The Scot is recuperating after undergoing surgery to fix a hip problem and won’t play for several months.

Despite the setback, the 30-year-old is eyeing a return to the grand slam stage at this year’s Wimbledon.

Murray, pictured, already has two Wimbledon titles, along with a US Open crown, but hasn’t played a competitive match since limping out of last year’schampionshipsatsw19.

Due to his age, the nature of the hip problem, and Murray’s history with injuries, Rusedski feels he may be finished at the very highest level.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “If he can get fit, he’s got a shot to get back into the top 100, then top 50 and build his game back.

“But it’s going to take a long while and I wish him all the best because hip surgeries are something that’s difficult to manage.

“I don’t think he will win another grand slam, just because of the physical issues he’s had, but I hope he proves me wrong.

“I think he’s done everything he could because usually with a hip problem, you take six months, you hope it comes back good. It didn’t come back the way he’d want so he had no choice but to have the hip surgery, and that’s probably another six months of recuperation.

“Murray has had back surgery already, his hip surgery, he’s had all sorts of injuries to cope with, so I think it’s going to be a big challenge. But he’s one of the greatest sportsmen we’ve ever had in this country and I hope he can come through it, but it’s going to be a big ask.” ●Heather Watson’s run at the Hobart International ended with a semi-final loss to defending champion and world No 36 Elise Mertens.

Watson, who won the title in 2015, fought back well after losing the opening set but Mertens regrouped and went on to triumph 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. The British No 2 now heads to Melbourne to open her Australian Open campaign against Kazakh Yulia Putintseva.

Mertens will face Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu, who reached her first WTA Tour final with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over fifth seed Lesia Tsurenko.
