Slains Castle, believed to have inspired Bram Stoker while he was writing Dracula, has been granted listed status

At last, an article to get your teeth into !

I visited Slains last year during a visit to the area and it’s setting on the cliffs makes it a very atmospheric place. Real shame that the place was full of litter and graffiti – really needs someone to take care of it. It’s a sad state of affairs that planning permission would even be entertained to demolish a historic castle to replace with holiday flats.

Slains Castle gets numerous visitors even though it’s not set up as tourist attraction. The castle is in a dangerous condition. Young families clamber all over the place, which if it was a building site, would be shut down as unsafe. One wonders if Heritage Lottery money could be used to make the castle safer.

Great job in saving this historic treasure. Vampire tourism is well known and various other places have reaped untold benefit, why not Slains Castle?

We spent our childhood playing here. Would love to see it preserved.
