MICHAEL ONEILL

Scotland failed to get their man as Northern Ireland boss Michael O’neill said he was turning down the opportunity to manage the national side. SFA boss Stewart Regan came in for criticism for his abortive attempt to persuade the former Brechin manager. @Blairdillon wrote: “Why they chased him so embarrassingly is beyond me. Average manager who boasted a 34 per cent win record. No thanks.” @Sccdxb asked: “How on earth do the people that run football in our country still have a job?” @J_warnock tweeted: “If he really wanted it, he would have said before now so I’m not surprised but this is another embarrassment for Scottish FA. Where do we go now?”

#HENRY BOLTON

The ongoing leadership crisis engulfing pro-brexit Ukip descended into farce yesterday as Henry Bolton refused to resign despite a motion of no confidence. As Ukip spokespeople continued to resign in protest, Mr Bolton remained holed up in a Kent hotel. @Almurray joked: “Henry Bolton won’t even be a pub quiz question.” @Thesatireparty added: “Theresa May reportedly ‘willing to offer expert guidance and assistance’ to UKIP leader Henry Bolton, regarding how to continue as party leader despite everyone wanting you to resign.” @Pickardje wrote: “Whoever is writing the script for the Henry Bolton tragicomedy is maybe overdoing the tragedy .” @Hugorifkind posted: “Congratulations to Henry Bolton for managing 115 days as leader of Ukip. For context, Diane James only managed 18.”

#PRINCESS EUGENIE

Princess Eugenie announced her engagement to nightclub manager Jack Brooksbank. The daughter of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, is eighth in line to the throne, and will wed at Windsor Chapel in the autumn. @Yashilove wrote: “Another royal wedding! I’m so excited. Congrats to the happy couple... it’s amazing to see that love does exist in the Royal Family!” @Rowdeveon asked: “Couldn’t they do double wedding with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, save us taxpayers some money?” @Yesforme2014 added: “Good for her , hope we wont be picking up the tab for any part of the wedding”
