#GAFFNEY
Scottish Labour MP Hugh Gaffney recited a poem at a Burns supper which contained homophobic and racist language. He has apologised for the comments and been ordered to attend ‘diversity training’. @Scotslabstudent tweeted: “The remarks made by Hugh Gaffney at our Burns Supper are unacceptable. We welcome Hugh’s apology and swift agreement to undertake equality and diversity training. Everyday racism and homophobia never has and never will have a place in our movement.” @kevhamilt0n posted: “Will he continue to hold both his elected positions?” @Musicstoo said: “And they wonder why they get called red Tories.” @pgjaxllan added: “Equality and diversity training will not alter the man’s unconscious racism.”
#MENTALHEALTH
In a BBC interview, Accrington striker Billy Kee has spoken about his struggle with severe anxiety and depression, comparing his anxiety to a rat. @Joey7barton said: “A must watch. What strength of character it takes to admit that in this profession. That’s a strong man. Good on you Billy. Good luck.” @Daddadb74 tweeted: “In addition to Kee’s courage and honesty, John Coleman deserves credit. He seems a very decent and understanding manager. Accrington Stanley obviously care about their staff.” @zifno88 added: “Wow. Can’t believe how much I feel this has made me think about my own actions by just watching this clip. Thank you for this.”
#HEDGEHOGCRISIS
A survey by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society has found the species is in “severe decline” across the UK. The intensification of agriculture, loss of hedgerows and use of pesticides have been blamed for the plunge in numbers. @Carolinelucas tweeted: “They may be small and they may be spikey, but they are one of Britain’s bestloved creatures – and they need protection. We need to rethink the way we farm... and build an agricultural system in which hedgehogs and other animals can thrive.”
