Record-breaking Ronaldo on song as Real fight back to stun PSG

-

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in each half as Real Madrid came from behind to defeat Paris Saint-germain 3-1 in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League clash last night.

Adrien Rabiot put PSG ahead in the 33rd minute. The visitors attacked down the right flank at pace and Rabiot fired homefromabout15yardsafter a neat back-heel from former Barcelona striker Neymar.

But Ronaldo equalised shortly before half-time, coolly converting a penalty kick that had been conceded by Giovani Lo Celso, who put his hands on Toni Kroos.

PSG’S withdrawal of striker

0 Cristiano Ronaldo: Double Edinson Cavani for full-back Thomas Meunier on 66 minutes seemed strange, and the momentum swung firmly in the hosts’ direction. Ronaldo put them ahead in the 83rd minute when he poked the ball home with his knee from about four yards after fine work by Marco Asensio.

Marcelo sealed the victory three minutes later – thanks to another cross from impressive substitute Asensio – to give the two-time defending champions a commanding lead heading into next month’s second leg in Paris.

PSG showed their strength against the European champions, playing well in an exciting back-and-forth match at the Bernabeu but that late third goal for Real significantly damaged their chances of finally succeeding in the Champions League.

Ronaldo has 101 Champions League goals in 95 matches with Real, a record for a player with the same club. He has 11 goals in seven Champions League games this season.
