She also said Wood had benefitted from his knowledge of the online activities of youngsters, gained through his job, adding: “You used this knowledge to target the groups concerned. There is no alternative but to impose a sentence of imprisonment.”

Wood,formerlyamathematics teacher at Renfrewshire Council-run Paisley Gram- mar, recorded young girls performing sex acts on themselves, and himself exposing his private parts to them. Police found nearly 1,000 indecent images of young girls on his computer. Wood chatted to girls online, then “rewarded” them for what they were doing by exposing himself to them once they had finished.

There were so many victims of Wood’s online behaviour that prosecutors were unable to say how many children in total were involved.

One of the videos he made, which police found on his computer, was one hour, 58 minutes and 56 seconds long.

The details emerged last month when Wood admitted his guilt during a pretrial hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court.

He was suspended when arrested by police and later resigned. A spokesperson for Hutchesons’ Grammar School said: “A member of staff at the Secondary School was immediately suspended when we became aware of the criminal charges. He no longer works at the school, having left last year.

“Police Scotland has advised us that our pupils and staff have not been, and are not, at risk.”
