Poster power

-

Rev David Robertson’s piece (Friends of the Scotsman, 14 March), “Children are being indoctrinated over gender – they should find identity in Christ” created a highly exaggerated picture of the work school staff are doing to support transgender children and young people.

To imply that “activist teachers” are “indoctrinating children and young people” to be transgender is insulting to those teachers who are working hard to include and support all children and young people in their school.

The article goes on to say there are “examples of primary schools where every classroomandcorridor”iscovered in LGBT Youth Scotland posters.

This is clearly an exaggeration; as the person who oversaw the development of these posters I have never been informed of this practice, although if I were, I would wholeheartedly welcome it!

Simply putting up posters does not make children transgender, but it may support someone to talk about how they feel and reduce incidences of bullying.

Anti-trans messages in the media are having a significant impact on young people who access LGBT Youth Scotland’s services.

They are often upset and alarmed by ongoing negative comments regarding their lives and identities. Rev David Robertson should consider this before writing such harmful pieces.
