Glasgow’s historic Pavilion Theatre was saved as a major blaze tore through Sauchiehall Street in the city centre yesterday. More than 120 firefighters and 20 engines were needed to tackle the “inferno”. @murdoch_charles posted: “A fire in Sauchiehall street leaves asbestos-fuelled smoke bellowing across Glasgow city centre, I hope no one is injured or harmed in any way.” @lauraewaddell added: “I hope the Savoy Centre is ok.” @cenizacaer stressed: “This morning has been horrific but I’m glad nobody has been injured.” @speelingmstake exclaimed: “Bit apocalyptic from the bus station side, smells like wood burning.”

The UK’S “iconic” new blue passports, which are set to return after Brexit, will be made in Europe. Home Office officials said British firm De La Rue had lost the contract to Franco-dutch firm Gemalto. @ Johnrentoul said: “De La Rue, which sounds French but is British, has lost contract to Gemalto, which sounds British but is French.” @jackcevans queried: “So the lobby are confused about whether Gemalto are Dutch or French. @gordonrayner and @Kateemccann thinks they are Dutch, @tnewtondunn reckons they are French. They will be making British passports blue, though.” @wesstreeting joked: “Taking back control, erm, I mean, reprendre le contrôle.”

#JOHNDOWD

US President Donald Trump’s lead lawyer for the investigation into Russia interference in the 2016 election has resigned. John Dowd stepped down yesterday, just days after he called for an end to Robert Mueller’s investigation. @ariehkovler noted: “Dowd was Trump’s lead lawyer, and urged cooperation and caution with Mueller. His resignation will mark a shift in strategy.” @marclippincott claimed: “When a lawyer unilaterally leaves a rich client voluntarily in the middle of a criminal investigation, it’s never a good sign for the client.” @Readiculous added: “Another one bites the dust.” @Makepeacesian declared: “Trump’s lawyer has quit. Lawyers don’t just ‘quit’. This is a case of ‘I know my client is a lying toe rag and I can no longer represent him’. I’ll wait for his memoirs.”
