Remembering MLK: Pupils commemorate protest that led to civil rights leader’s death
Memphis schoolchildren help mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jnr yesterday.
Pupils from the Promise Academy elementary school held up I Am A Man banners to commemorate the sanitation workers strike in 1968, during which the civil rights leader was killed.
Hundreds took part in a march led by the workers’ union, whose low pay King had come to protest against when he was shot.
King’s daughter, Bernice, at the award of a peace prize in his honour in Atlanta, described him as “the apostle of non-violence”.
