Northern Fuerteventura

- Robin Mckelvie

Friday, midday

Drive through the epic dunes of the Parque Natural de Corralejo to reach the oasis of the Atlantis Bahia Real (www.atlantisbahiareal.com, double rooms from £182). Corralejo’s only five-star hotel boasts seven restaurants and its own Atlantic beachfront.

1pm

Recline in the Atlantis’ overwater restaurant, Coco Beach, appreciating the starched white sands and big skies of laidback Corralejo as you enjoy grilled Saharan squid.

2.30pm

Ease along the coast into the old core of Corralejo. Admire the shops, check out the beaches and then relax in a waterfront bar with an ice-cold Tropical beer.

5pm

Head over to the sleepier resort of El Cotillo on the west coast, where the harbour is dedicated to the local fishing fleet.

7pm

Enjoy your sea view table at Vaca Azul (www.vacaazul.es), where a touch of Gallic élan spices up the boatfresh seafood. Start with the grilled octopus, best followed with a fresh fish, boca negra, and washed down with a glass of crisp Malvasia from neighbouring Lanzarote.

Saturday, 9am

Hop on a ferry at Corralejo’s harbour and bounce across to the Isla de Lobos. This uninhabited stunner offers walking trails, a wee volcano to climb and picture postcard white beaches.

Midday

If you’ve booked ahead (ask the ferry operators) dine at the tiny restaurant on the island. Alternatively enjoy a picnic laced with Majorero, the delicious, award-winning Fuerteventura goat’s cheese.

5pm

Cruise back to Corralejo and enjoy chilled live DJ sounds at the Galera Beach Bar (www.galerabeach.net) and a sundowner.

7pm

Some of the waterfront restaurants are unashamedly geared towards tourists, but the Cofradia (Calle Muelle 5) is run by the local fishermen’s co-operative so the fish couldn’t be fresher.

Sunday, 9am

Explore the legendary sandy dunes and sweeping beaches of the Parque Natural de Corralejo. Or just enjoy a superb treatment at the hotel spa before a session in their thermal circuit. ■

Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) offer direct return flights to Fuerteventura from Edinburgh from around £85.98. Car hire is available at the airport from Holiday Autos (www.holidayautos.com).
