Sabbath daze?

-

Arts correspondent Brian Ferguson really takes the biscuit with his fence-sitting on the An Lanntair versus the Sabbatarians dispute on Lewis (Perspective, 9 April).

An Lanntair, says he, would be wise to think carefully about their next move. Having thought carefully, they should very definitely open on Sundays.

That Lewis should remain in thrall to religious fundamentalists with comical beliefs, and have the protection of “culture and tradition” is beyond belief. Honour killing is traditional, wife-beating is traditional, but that’s no reason to support or fail to condemn these practices.

I’m confident there is a sizable minority of atheists on Lewis, a larger number who are apathetic about religion, and “none of the above” ie Muslims, Jews and Hindus.

It’s time they stood up against the extreme Presbyterians, who still have great power in local institutions and the Western Isles Council. Brian Ferguson should help. CRAWFORD MACKIE
