Ayr defeat leaves door open for Raith

The League 1 title race is set to go down to the last weekend after league leaders Ayr United lost 2-1 at home to Stranraer.

Ian Mccall’s side were five points ahead at kick-off against the Blues, but by the time they face Alloa on Sunday they could be behind Raith Rovers, who defeated Queen’s Park 2-0.

Grant Anderson looped a header into Ayr’s net after three minutes but Jamie Adams replied 13 minutes later. Ayr were reduced to ten men just before the break when Lawrence Shankland was sent off after clashing with Morgyn Neil.

Adams then fouled Kyle Turner and Scott Agnew scored the resultant penalty five minutes from time.

“We will be appealing Lawrence’s dismissal as it should have been a yellow card,” Ayr boss Mccall said.

At Stark’s Park, Bobby Barr and Dario Zanatta cracked home two fine first-half goals to keep Raith’s title hopes alive and ensure the Hampden side will finish in the bottom two.

Arbroath remain third after a 5-0 win at East Fife where Michael Mckenna and Ryan Wallace scored in the first half and Leighton Mcintosh, Colin Hamilton and Bobby Linn netted in the second with the hosts losing Chris Kane to a red card.

Alloa are level on points with the Red Lichties after a 1-0 win over a Forfar side who are now safe with Callum Crane hitting the winner on 15 minutes and the Wasps’ Jamie Mccart being sent off.

Airdrie got the better of Albionrovers 2-0 with Adam Brown scoring in the first half and Tom Fry in the second. Montrose remain in control of the title after a 1-0 win over Berwick Rangers in a game at Links Park that was held up for more than an hour.

Chris Templeman tapped in a cross after ten minutes but play was stopped 18 minutes later when visiting striker Ousman See suffered a broken leg. He was left on the pitch until an ambulance arrived and tended to him before taking him to hospital.
