Royal baby is named Prince Louis in tribute to Lord Mountbatten

- By LAURA ELSTON

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their baby son Louis Arthur Charles.

The couple’s third child, who was born on Monday April 23 at 11.01am, weighing 8lb 7oz, will be known as Prince Louis, Kensingtonpalaceannounced after a four-day wait.

The Palace said in a short statement: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles. The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

The baby is fifth in line to the throne and the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s sixth great-grandchild.

William and Kate’s choice came as a surprise because the name is already one of Prince George’s middle names.

It pays tribute to the Prince of Wales’s great-uncle, Earl Mountbatten, who was murdered by the IRA.

Yesterday an Aberdeen couple whose son has the same name and birthday as the royal baby said they have “bragging rights” – after calling him Louis first.

Carey and Nicky Aiken also welcomed their own son into the world on Monday. They named him Louis earlier this week.

Mr Aiken said the couple “couldn’t stop laughing” when they heard the news about Prince Louis.

He said they “couldn’t be happier” after the birth of their son.

“Needless to say we love him to bits. He was named after my granddad, Louis Thompson. My nana is chuffed.

“We picked the name out in advance - well, 90 per cent sure, and then when he was born we were set. He looked like a Louis. Given we announced the name first, we definitely called bragging rights!”

Louis Aiken was born at 8:05pm on Monday at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and weighed 5lb 8oz.

Bookmakers had Arthur as the favourite for the royal baby, with James and Philip also popular.

The middle name Charles is a tribute to the duke’s father, the Prince of Wales.
