The UK government should consider ordering a recall of up to a million Whirlpool tumble dryers over defects that can cause them to catch fire, MPS have said.

Theus-basedfirmhas failed to take responsibility for safety issues with its machines despite a warning from politicians in January, the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee said.

It had urged the firm to address issues behind at least 750 fires involving the dryers since 2004, including one caused by a faulty door mechanism in North Wales.

Committee chairwoman Rachel Reeves has written to Andrew Griffiths, Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility, urging the safety standards office intervenes. Scots are the least likely to feel more proud to be British as a result of the impending royal wedding, according to a new survey.

Only a quarter (26 per cent) admitted to feel any patriotism from next week’s wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

But on the whole Britons are feeling more patriotic in the run-up to the royal wedding with a third saying that they feel more proud to be British.

The marriage has led to a third of Britons feeling more proud to be British - with three in ten saying they will watch the ceremony on television.

The consumer analysts Mintel surveyed 2,000 British adults.
