This is really tragic, after all the effort and money put into restoring them. But then I suppose Gaelic encyclopedias and whiteelephant airports have higher priority. Give them back to BRITISH Waterways to run properly.

So Hot It’s not only the canal, it’s the walkways and the bridges. the towpath is extremely popular with cyclist, dog walkers, runners etc. If it falls into disrepair then that will be a terrible shame. Towards the east they are used by rowing teams and for hire, pleasure craft motor up and down in some parts. But I agree, the boat owners surely must make a reasonable contribution – who’s to say they don’t already?

Sparts Prior to the Millennium, long stretches of canals across Great Britain were derelict. England and Wales has just over 2,400 miles of canals, and 368 miles of canals are still unnavigable because they are in a state of disrepair. A map of abandoned canals can be viewed online. British Waterways in England and Wales has had its funding cut and is unable to bring miles of waterways back into use, and this has led to self-help Trusts being formed in an attempt to make repairs.

Samuel Coldstream Or another way of looking at is that British Waterways has rendered over 2000 miles of navigable, usable canal infrastructure. Scottish Canals, however, is struggling with less than 175 miles in terms of the combined length of the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals.

Suburban Wolf This is another example of the, until now, unseen side of Scotland’s rot under the SNP. We all know the headline grabbers such as health service, education et al but our general infrastructure is gradually being eroded under the scorched earth policy of Sturgeon.
