Flying the flags
Since the march for indepence All Under One Banner, The Scotsman has published a series of letters sneering at the participants. The latest is from Douglas Cowe (Letters, 10 May) who says that in a future referendum “The silent majority will win” and “we don’t have to march, shout or wave flags”. Maybe so, but those of us who support independence, are confident that when it comes to the next referendum, our not-so-silent activists will considerably outnumber those on the Unionist side prepared to get out of their armchairs.
Mr co we complain sat length about the article by Darren Mcgarvey (Perspective, 8 May) and the division caused in our society by the independence movement. This is natural as many people get anxious when the status quo is challenged. However, he seems to be quite relaxed about the angry comments made by the leader of the opposition in Holyrood, Ruth Davidson in this paper, who rages on about Indyref2 much more than Nicola Sturgeon.
Mr Co we finishes his letter with a blatant misrepresentation of the comments made by Darren Mcgarvey. Mr Mcgarvey wrote: “Those who believe the Union is the best bet when delivering social justice, would do well to concede more may be at play here than blind patriotism or antienglish sentiment.”
Mr Cowe’s version of this is “blind patriotism or antienglish
sentiment that sums up the independence movement”. His desperate distortion of Darren Mcgarvey’s meaning is patently untrue and to use his word, shameful.
