North Fife
Friday, midday
Check into Lindores (two person lodge from £240), whose massive luxury lodges sit on a working farm. We’re talking swish décor, log burning stoves, saunas and outdoor hot tubs where you can enjoy the local aqua vitae under the stars.
1pm
Pop to Lindores Abbey, site of the first documented whisky production. A new whisky distillery has just opened (www.lindoresabbeydistillery.com). Enjoy lunch in the café with local butcher’s pies and Scotch eggs, or soup with bread from Newburgh.
2pm
Take a tour before securing a bottle in the Lindores Distillery shop of Aqua Vitae, their local herb infused spirit.
4pm
Wander around the ruined abbey conjuring up the days when monks plucked apples from the orchards and spirited up the water of life.
7pm
It’s dinner in with the hamper from the superb Ardross Farm Shop (www.ardrossfarm.co.uk) ordered in advance. Feast on local Puddledub ham, Pittenweem oatcakes, Anster cheddar and a host of Fife foodie goodies.
Saturday, 8am
Wake early to catch sunrise on the wee hill above Lindores. Savour a vista taking in a huge sweep of Fife and the silvery Tay. If you’re lucky you may even see Schiehallion.
Midday
Head to nearby Falkland for lunch in one of the cafes that you’ll find dotted around this remarkable historic village.
1pm
Explore epic Falkland Palace (www. nts.org.uk), from where the Stuart kings once held sway over the entire island of Britain. It oozes regal grandeur.
7pm
Enjoy views of Dundee and the new V&A Museum across the Tay at the glorious Newport (www. thenewportrestaurant.co.uk). Mercurial Masterchef: The Professionals winner Jamie Scott works wonders with the ultra fresh local produce.
Sunday, 9am
You can bring your own horse to Lindores for a canter around their hillside and jumps, as they are a leading equestrian centre too. Or just enjoy a last soak in your outdoor hot tub. n
