BOXING

George Groves has been declared fit to face Callum Smith in the final of the supermiddleweight World Boxing Super Series. The fight was placed in doubt when Groves, 30, had surgery on his left shoulder, which he dislocated in the final round of his unanimous points win against Chris Eubank Jr in February. But the bout, first scheduled for this Saturday, will now be moved to the end of August or beginning of September. The change in date will allow Groves to defend his WBA title for a third time as he faces Liverpool’s Smith for the inaugural Muhammad Ali Trophy.

ICE HOCKEY

Tomas Nosek netted a late brace as the Vegas Golden Knights beat Washington Capitals 6-4 in a closely-fought opening game of the Stanley Cup finals. Vegas were the first to net through Colin Miller after seven minutes, but the Capitals answered back by scoring twice in 42 seconds thanks to Brett Connolly and Nicklas Backstrom. William Karlsson made it 2-2 after the first 20 minutes, while Reilly Smith fired in a wrist shot three minutes in to the second period to edge the Golden Knights ahead. Their lead did not last long, however, and after less than two minutes of the final period the score was even at 4-4. Nosek scored the tie-breaking goal just under halfway through the period, before consolidating the lead with just three seconds to go. STANLEY CUP: Vegas Golden Knights 6 Washington Capitals 4 (Vegas lead series 1-0).
