The New York Yankees put six runs on the board in one inning as Greg Bird and Austin Romine both cleared the fence in a 7-4 win over the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees were level at 1-1 going into the fourth after 21-year-old Gleyber Torres, playing in just his 36th game, struck his 10th career home run - becoming the youngest player since Mickey Mantle in 1953 to reach double figures for the Yankees. But Bird and Romine’s home runs combined with RBI singles from Miguel Andujar and Clint Frazier to extend the Yankees’ lead to seven en route to victory in the first match of the double-header at Comerica Park. Hosts Detroit took the second game 4-2 with RBI doubles from James Mccann and Jeimer Candelario putting the Tigers in front and Shane Greene striking out three for the save. The San Diego Padres scored seven runs in the fifth as they beat the Atlanta Braves 11-4, while the San Francisco Giants also had a seven-run inning as they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-3. In the night’s other game, three RBI singles from Mike Trout, Justin Upton and Albert Pujols in the eighth helped the Los Angeles Angels pull away from the Kansas City Royals in a 9-6 victory. The Washington Capitals are within one game of winning a first Stanley Cup in their 44-year history after a 6-2 drubbing of the Vegas Golden Knights. The Caps did much of the damage in the opening period of game four, with TJ Oshie finding the net for the eighth time in the play-offs to give the home side the advantage after 9:54. Tom Wilson and Devante Smith-pelly then extended Washington’s lead to three inside the opening 20 minutes at the Capital One Arena. John Carlson made it 4-0 with the only goal of the second period but Vegas threatened a comeback when James Neal and Reilly Smith fired past Braden Holtby to make it 4-2 with seven minutes left to play. However, Washington responded immediately and Michal Kempny made it 5-2 before Brett Connolly scored the Caps’ third powerplay goal with just over a minute left on the clock to wrap up the win. The Capitals now lead the best-of-seven series 3-1. The fifth game takes place at the T-mobile Arena on tomorrow night. STANLEY CUP FINALS: Washington Capitals 6 Vegas Golden Knights 2 (Washington lead best-of-seven series 3-1).
