Dr Lee, a parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Justice, announced his resignation yesterday morning, hours before MPS began two days of debate on the Withdrawal Bill.

The practicing GP – previously reprimanded by party whips over his criticism of the government’s approach to Brexit – said it was “hard to be part of a government that would countenance the breach of such fundamental principles, and it is important that individual ministers and Parliamentarians should be able to speak up”.
