Dr Lee, a parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Justice, announced his resignation yesterday morning, hours before MPS began two days of debate on the Withdrawal Bill.
The practicing GP – previously reprimanded by party whips over his criticism of the government’s approach to Brexit – said it was “hard to be part of a government that would countenance the breach of such fundamental principles, and it is important that individual ministers and Parliamentarians should be able to speak up”.
Following the concession from the government on a meaningful vote for MPS, Dr Lee said he was “delighted” by the decision, adding “this justifies my decision to resign and makes it a lot less painful”.
