#EDINBURGH HOGMANAY
It may still be summer, but thoughts are already turning to Scotland’s flagship New Year’s Eve celebration in Edinburgh. We revealed yesterday that the festival’s organisers Underbelly want more locals to attend the event, but there was controversy as the company revealed they would revive a controversial ‘exploitative’ volunteer scheme. @Betterthanzero claimed: “The nasty underside of Edinburgh’s festival culture – exploiting under-paid or unpaid work. At Hogmanay we supported @Fairfringe to prevent it and we’ll do it again. P.s. if you’ll be working at the @edfringe, join a union, get involved, & get your due.” @THE_SSP_ agreed: “Paying people for the work they do to make Edinburgh’s famous, well-attended Hogmanay bash a safe, enjoyable environment is a no-brainer.” @Housetoastonish posted: “Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations are the least fun way you can spend an evening while ostensibly having fun.” @Sophiapangloss wrote: “I’m surprised (the figure for local ticket sales) is as high as 17%, and I would imagine most of those are still at school. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay has killed Hogmanay in Edinburgh.”
#NORTHKOREA
After months of back and forth and a weekend of intense diplomacy, Donald Trump finally met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un yesterday. The President came under scrutiny for his comments after the meeting, where he praised the dictator of the brutal hermit state. @Therickydevila tweeted: “So, what I predicted was right. Kim Jong Un achieved his goal in obtaining documented legitimacy and photos for propaganda without really giving anything. Instead, he was given more, that the US would stop military exercises with South Korea, giving nothing. The art of the fool.” @Krassentein added: “Trump said he was honoured to shake Kim Jong Un’s hand at the #Trumpkimsummit. Wrong, Mr President. It is not an honour to shake a murderous dictator’s hand. It’s an honour to shake the hands of people like Trudeau and Macron.” @Redtracoon wrote: “Odd how many Americans seemed to flip overnight to support one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world.”
