Clock is ticking

The 15-minute Westminster farce over Brexit devolution implications confirms that it is the English Parliament and should convince every democrat in Scotland that we need to get out of that place.

Theuk government ignored the democratic decision of the Scottish Parliament, which was supported by four of our main parties, and rode roughshod over devolution.

Following the Tory proposed power grab of issues specifically devolved to the Scottish Parliament under the 1998 Scotland Act, David Mundell promised to bring forward amendments to both Houses plus a full debate in House of Commons.

All we got was 15 minutes of filibustering by Tory David Liddington with no time allowed for any opposition speeches. The time allowed wasn’t helped when Labour earlier insisted on 11 time-consuming and pointless individual votes and deliberate delaying tactics by the Tories when it came to counting the votes.

Astonishing then that all Labour and Lib Dem MPS from Scotland abstained on the devolution amendments vote which if passed would have returned the Bill to the House of Lords for further revision. So much for relying on them to stand up against Westminster’s total disregard for Scotland, scrutiny and democracy, but with BBC national TV news coverage ignoring the devolution implications of Brexit they probably think no one will notice.

We are no longer better together as equal partners in a Union and this is the day the devolution settlement died.
