Auxiliary proves to be the main horse for Mullaney at Hamilton

- By GORDON BROWN

Auxiliary was a well-backed winner for Lawrence Mullaney at Hamilton last night.

Sent off the 5-2 joint favourite, the Malton raider reeled in long-time leader Falcon’s Fire in the closing stages to land the Watch Racing UK In HD Handicap by a neck.

The winning trainer said: “I love coming to Hamilton and, along with York, it’s always been one of my favourite tracks. I’ve just taken over training from this yard and I thought Auxiliary was just getting the better of the leader.

“He was fit enough to win tonight but will come on for the run and will hopefully continue to do well. He’s a tough horse and I told [jockey] Graham Lee I was confident beforehand.”

The finish of the night came when Mr Wagyu and Cameo dead-heated for the Hamilton Audi RS Performance Handicap.

Tony Hamilton on Cameo held a narrow advantage until Jason Hart forced Mr Wagyu upsides in a desperate dash for the line with judge Fraser Perratt taking several minutes to determine the outcome.

Hart said: “Neither Tony nor I had a clue who had won, that’s how close it was. My horse was in front but then got headed and he’s really battled on gamely – the application of the visor has helped this lad travel sweeter in the middle of his races.”

Meanwhile, Glencadam Master can defy top weight in the Burlington Palm Hotel Of Great Yarmouth Handicap at the seaside venue today.

He certainly would not be one of John Gosden’s stable stars, but he showed some decent form as a juvenile, although he has yet to really build on that this term.

His recent second in firsttime blinkers showed some promise, though, and if he can take a more restrained approach through the early stages, he might have enough in reserve to fend off his rivals.

William Haggas’ patient approach with Sea Of Class can continue to pay dividends in the Johnnie Lewis Memorial British EBF Stakes at Newbury.

She will be having just her third start, having been narrowly edged out on her Newmarket maiden bow in April before opening her account in another Listed heat at this track last month.

Sea Of Class impressed with a two-length victory that day, coming from last to first off a bit of a muddling pace, before passing the post with plenty seemingly in hand.
