Strained re­la­tions: US and Chi­nese of­fi­cials meet in Beijing as trade tar­iff row con­tin­ues

Mike Pom­peo, the US sec­re­tary of state, and Wang Li, the Chi­nese for­eign min­is­ter, hold a joint press con­fer­ence at Beijing’s Great Hall of the Peo­ple yes­ter­day.

De­spite the bou­quets, the meet­ing was strained at times, with the Chi­nese gov­ern­ment re­new­ing its threat to scrap deals with Wash­ing­ton aimed at de­fus­ing a heated trade dis­pute.

US pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump has threat­ened to raise tar­iffs on Chi­nese goods in re­sponse to com­plaints about Beijing’s trade sur­plus. The White House is due to is­sue a list of of Chi­nese goods tar­geted for a 25 per cent tar­iff.
