It just wouldn’t be summer in Scotland without torrential rain, wind and flooding bringing misery to commuters. Storm Hector battered Ireland overnight before moving into Scotland and causing uprooted trees amid high winds. @Polscotcontrol advised: “Feeling sorry for colleagues out dealing with 35 weather calls so far in the east. Mostly debris & falling trees. Nothing serious so far. Take care out there.” @Scottreid1980 observed: “Special shoutout to Ardrossan, which finds itself cut off once again because the people who designed the rail network decided to build the line right beside the bloody sea.” @Colinjo828262909 joked: “Storm Hector...last time Hector stormed through the central belt it wiped out a whole football club.” @Sarahburthe wrote: “Seabirds getting hammered by this storm - heartbreaking. Our long-term monitoring of these populations is crucial for showing just how big an impact extreme weather associated with climate change can have on populations.” @Imrankhan tweeted: “West coast mainline is down so I’m stranded in Edinburgh by #Stormhector! Will I get to Manchester in time for Eid with the family? I suddenly feel massively under-catered for by cheesy Christmas films.” @Finearly added: “Honestly you would think it’s the middle of autumn! #Stormhector made his presence felt last night with the trees and powerlines laying along the street.” @Jennagardiner said: “Back working at my dissertation after a morning of colouring in & making jigsaws with my niece. I know which activity I’d rather be doing right now, but at least Storm Hector makes it a tad easier to sit inside at the laptop!”

The festival of football that is the Fifa World Cup got underway in Moscow last night as hosts Russia took on Saudi Arabia. Germany, Brazil and France are among the favourites for the tournament. @Kevinbridges86 quipped: “Robbie Williams getting everyone right in the mood for World Cup ‘98 there.” @Aljwhite added: “Sending Robbie Williams over to Russia to sing a medley is a hell of a strong response to claims of assassinations happening on British soil.” @Serialsockthief tweeted: “I still get so excited by start of #Worldcup even if Scotland aren’t involved. I think I’ve just forgotten how it feels now. ”
