May blasts Trump on child cages

- By PARIS GOURTSOYANNIS

Theresa May has been forced into a public condemnation of Donald Trump over his administration’s controversial immigration policy, saying the separation of children from their families at the Us border was“completely

and unequivocally wrong”. The Prime Minister said Mr Trump’s approach to child migrants was “deeply disturbing” as US Ambassador Woody Johnson confirmed the president would meet the Queen during his visit to the UK next month.

Mrs May’s comments came as the US president last night signed an executive order promising to “keep families together”, saying he had been swayed by pictures of children being taken from their parents.

Facing calls to cancel the planned visit by the American president, Mrs May said face-to-face meetings gave her the chance to raise issues where the UK and US disagree. Footage of children held in cages, crying for their parents at detention camps along the border with Mexico has drawn global condemnation.

Children as young as three months are being transported across the US for fostering and several states have withdrawn their support for border policing efforts in protest.

SNP’S Westminster leader Ian Blackford highlighted warnings from former US immigration officials that many of the more than 2,300 children detained while they go through a separate deportation process may never be returned to their families.

Mrs May said the “special relationship” with the US meant“whenwedisagreewith what they are doing, we say so”. She said: “This is wrong.”
