Brexit job losses
Few letters focus on Brexit these days. But the problem with this disinterest is that we will soon waken up to having huge losses of tax-take, leading to further deterioration of services.
Sir Mark Boleat, formerly a governor in the city of London, tells us: “It is no longer contingency planning. Banks won’t be putting out press releases saying they are moving because they don’t want the publicity. They are just getting on with it.”
So the 75,000 job loss prediction made some time ago now seems quite realistic. What else should we waken up to? Employers are sounding alarm bells about loss of skilled workers. Scotland’s economy is being held back by the endless Brexit malaise.
The so-called Brexit dividend for the NHS is like Neville Chamberlain’s note signed by Hitler promising “Peace in our time”. Creative politics can create such “scraps of paper” by using creative accountancy.
