Andrew Macaulay Surely it’s time for the virtuesign­alling politician­s who back minimum pricing to look closer to home and get rid of subsidised alcohol in the bars of Holyrood. It seems nauseating for them to shout for minimum pricing whilst getting their own fix cheap at the taxpayers’ expense.

Auld Reekie I’d like to see some simple graphs that show quantities of alcohol consumed by age, by sex and by class. If these figures represent averages, some people must be consuming an enormous amount because my family and friends consume very little and I know several people who don’t consume any at all.

Bramley I think most of the child poverty and deprivatio­n that we hear about is the direct result of parents being too smashed out of their minds to feed, clothe and house their children. All they care about is the next fix or the next drink.

old clothes and porridge Putting up the price of alcohol is not addressing the problem. The SG should be asking why do some become alcoholics, what are the underlying problems? This is just a quick “fix” that doesn’t work. Some start as social drinkers but then can’t handle the amount they drink, others drink to excess for all kinds of reasons.
