Aidan’s own goal?

-

It ‘s not often that I find myself in anything other than full agreement with what Aidan Smith has to say on football. I was therefore taken aback that he seems to expect that his readers might have found the BBC coverage of the England vs Tunisia World Cup match on Monday to be “difficult “for them (Sport, 20 June).

Now, like most football fans I am often scunnered by the excessive exuberance of reporters, summarisers and commentators but that applies as much to those with a Glasgow/old Firm bias and those who lose all sense of reason and logic when reporting on the Scottish national team as it does to the English.

I understand that for a minority of Scots it will always be “anyone but England” but I thought Aidan was above that sort of petty tribalism. Let’s get behind our neighbours and allow them the same sort of over exuberance as we ourselves are often guilty of.
