Young farmers award candidates ‘exceptional’
The finals of the Scottish Association of Young Farmer Clubs’ inaugural Young Farmer of the Year competition, which took place at the Highland show, saw Andrew Neilson from Avondale YFC lift the award.
Six finalists competed in the final stages of a comprehensive assessment at this year’s Royal Highland Show, which took into account technical expertise, knowledge and entrepreneurship.
The new trophy donated by Sir John Campbell of Glenrath Farms was presented by RBS chief Ross Mcewan at a celebratory dinner following the event which was attended by leading representatives from the farming, food and rural industries.
Neilson, 22, works on the family’s 400-acre farm at Strathaven where the focus is on the unit’s 350-strong Holstein dairy herd and pedigree Texel flock.
Penny Montgomerie, SAYFC chief executive, said:“the calibre of entrants and the shortlisted candidates were exceptional and a great reflection on the next generation of farming leaders.
“This was a robust and comprehensive assessment that tested key skills essential to running modern businesses.”
