Get into the swing with a golf home

A course at the bottom of the garden isn’t the only attraction of these properties, finds Kirsty Mcluckie

The World Cup is finished, Wimbledon has played its last set for the year, so it is time to turn to golf. Today sees the start of the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie but for those who live and breathe golf, a move to a property conducive to a daily round is tempting.

Elsewhere in the world, describing a home as a golf property conjures up the sort of manicured gated communities created round a course in places like Miami or Portugal.

In Scotland, there are few purpose-built golf resorts but because of the plethora of courses there is still plenty of choice for those who want to walk out of their front door and on to the first tee.

Fairmount in Auchterarder is an outstanding traditional detached house beside the Perthshire town’s golf course.

The five-bedroomed family home is full of Victorian charm and character and the house has been thoughtfully upgraded and extended over the years to combine modern and traditional features.

It has bright well-proportioned rooms with high ceilings and cornice work and large windows to bring plenty of natural light. The formal dining room has a bay window and traditional fireplace.

The drawing room has views over the stunning garden while the kitchen has a gas-fired Aga, a dining area and seating area with further views over the gardens.

Upstairs the views from the bedroom are of a park and the golf course, so occupants can relive their triumphs before bed.

Archer House is a conversion by S1 Developments of an historic period building in a central location in the sought-after village of Gullane, a Mecca for golf enthusiasts, including all those who turned out for the Scottish Open last week.

The building was originally built as a hotel in 1892 by a butler at Archerfield House, who named it the Royal Archers Hotel.

The conversion will create eight unique apartments combining contemporary finishes with original features.

The building is within easy walking distance of the golf courses, beaches, shops and restaurants and would suit as a permanent, holiday or investment property.

Each apartment has a parking space and there are balconies and terraces to some of the apartments. Five of the eight are still available, with an entry date of December or January.

The house at 43 Barnton Avenue West in Edinburgh is fantastic family home with breathtaking views of two of the city’s most prestigious golf courses, the Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society and the Royal Burgess. The entrance hall has a doubleheight ceiling and an elegant staircase with cathedral-like proportions.

The majority of the ground floor is a series of interconnecting rooms linked with parquet flooring.

The open-plan kitchen, dining and living room features an island with Italian marble and high quality fixtures and fittings.

From the dining area, double doors connect to a sitting room, with arched glass doors that open on to the terrace and garden. This rooms leads in turn to the family sitting room which features a wood burner.

The current owners have upgraded the interiors – this is a stylish, home with a fabulous green outlook.
